Description

Cameron erosions in a hiatal hernia can be a cause of chronic blood loss and iron deficiency anemia.

Synonym: Cameron ulcer, Cameron lesion

Features of a Cameron erosion:

(1) presence of a large, sliding hiatal hernia

(2) one or more linear erosions on mucosal folds in the neck of the hiatal hernia (vertical red erosions in endoscopic pictures)

(3) acute, chronic or recurrent upper gastrointestinal bleeding which can result in iron deficiency

They are believed to occur due to vascular compression by the diaphragm and/or mechanical trauma. As a result a biopsy may show histologic changes seen in ischemic gastritis.
