Description

Yang et al reported the Calgary Postoperative Pain After Spine Surgery (CAPPS) score for identifying a patient at risk for poor postoperative pain control after elective spine surgery. The authors are from the University of Calgary and Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Patient selection: elective spine surgery

Parameters:

(1) age in years

(2) sex

(3) daily opioid use prior to surgery

(4) preoperative NRS neck/back pain (VAS scale from 0 to 10)

(5) depression level, based on PHQ-9, from 0 to 23

(6) number of motion segments (any part of 2 adjacent articulating vertebrae) treated

(7) fusion surgery
