Description

Dietary intake of calcium and vitamin D should be carefully monitored in a patient with asymptomatic hyperparathyroidism.


 

Recommended calcium intake: 1,000 to 1,200 mg per day (standard intake)

 

Diets with restricted or enriched calcium intake should be avoided.

 

If the serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D is < 20 ng/mL then consider careful vitamin D replacement with:

(1) 400 to 600 IU per day (physiological replacement dosage)

(2) regular calcium monitoring to detect hypercalcemia
