Description

Rehman et al evaluated dyspneic patients in the Emergency Department using C-reactive protein (CRP) and pro-Brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP). They identified patients at risk for increased 1 year mortality. The authors are from Massachusetts General Hospital and Northwestern University.

Assays:

(1) CRP (Roche Diagnostics): reference range not stated

(2) NT-proBNP: neither method nor reference range stated but reference made to the PRIDE study

Parameters from multivariate analysis with significant hazard ratios and low p values::

(1) CRP in mg/L

(2) NT-proBNP

(3) heart murmur

= SUM(points for the 3 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum number of risk factors: 0

• maximum number of risk factors: 3

• The greater the number of risk factors the greater the 1 year mortality rate.
