Description

Burns et al reported the Burns Wean Assessment Program (BWAP) for evaluating a patient for weaning. Two subscores are used to generate a final overall score. The authors are from the University of Virginia.

Patient selection: ventilated patient being assessed for weaning

Parameters:

(1) general assessment subscore, from 0 to 12

(2) respiratory assessment subscore, from 0 to 14

total score =

= (general assessment subscore) + (respiratory assessment subscore)

Interpretation:

• minimum total score: 0

• maximum total score: 26

final BWAP score =

= (total score) / 26 * 100

Interpretation:

• minimum final BWAP score: 0

• maximum final BWAP score: 100

• Patients who are weaned successfully typically have a final score > 50.
