Description

Hash oil and cannabis wax are extracts from marijuana plants with very high concentrations of THC. Performing the extraction is associated with a high risk of explosion and/or fire, which can result in severe burns.

Production involves soak the marijuana leaves and flowers in containers of a solvent such as butane. Once separated from the plant material, the solvent is evaporated, and the residue is collected.

Any open flame or spark can ignite any vapors that have collected.

Much of the production is illegal and performed by people with little knowledge of how to do the extraction safely.

Risk factors for explosion, fire and burn injury:

(1) lack of experience

(2) absence of personal protective equipment

(3) unsafe environment with poor ventilation

(4) large volume of solvent present

(5) close proximity to the explosion
