Description

Kemp et al reported the BuRN (Burns Risk assessment for Neglect or abuse) Tool for identification of maltreatment associated with burns. The tool can help to identify a child with scalds who should be investigated. The authors are from Cardiff University, University of Bristol and the University of the West of England.

Patient selection: pediatric patient with a nonscald burn

Parameters:

(1) previously known to social care

(2) burn severity

(3) concern about the explanation for burn injury (inconsistent, does not fit burn pattern)

(4) age of the child in years

(5) concerns about supervision

Interpretation:

minimum score: 0

maximum score: 10

A score >=3 is associated with a burn that should be investigated.

Performance:

The sensitivity was 66% for the derivation cohort and 82% for the validation cohort.

The specificity was 75% for the derivation cohort and 79% for the validation cohort.

The area under the ROC curve is 0.85.
