Psoralen Ultraviolet A (PUVA) therapy is a phototherapy used for a number of skin disorders and to enhance tanning. It can be a cause of significant burn injury.
Burns are typically:
(1) second degree (partial thickness)
(2) affected by the skin area exposed to light
(3) appear 1-3 days after exposure
Reasons for the burn:
(1) use of psoralen cream in addition to oral psoralen
(2) prolonged sunbathing after a phototreatment
(3) excessive dose of oral psoralen
(4) incorrect handling of the UV light source resulting in overexposure
