Garcia-Pagan et al developed an index for patients with the Budd-Chiari Syndrome after TIPS procedure. This can help to identify a patient who may benefit from the procedure. The authors are from multiple institutions in Europe belonging to the BCS-TIPS Group.
Patient selection: hepatic vein thrombosis with Budd-Chiari syndrome
Outcome: prognosis after transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS)
• A score > 7 was associated with a poor prognosis (death or liver transplant within 1 year) after TIPS. In the study a poor outcome occurred in 7 of 8 patients with a score > 7 (87%).
• A poor outcome occurred in 5 of 114 patients with a score <= 7 (4%).
Performance:
• The area under the ROC curve for OLT-free survival at 1 year after TIPS 0.86.
