Description

Brucellosis may infect the genital tract and rarely can occur as a sexually-transmitted disease (STD).

Genital infection in the male may include:

(1) prostatitis

(2) epididymitis

(3) orchitis with or without necrotizing abscesses

(4) cystitis

Transmission during sexual intercourse has rarely been described. Features include:

(1) evidence of brucellosis in one sexual partner

(2) absence of brucellosis in the other sexual partner prior to sexual intercourse

(3) development of brucellosis in that partner after unprotected sexual intercourse

(4) exclusion of other sources of transmission

Brucella can be cultured from semen but PCR may be a more sensitive method of detection.
