Description

A brownfield is a site contaminated with low levels of hazardous material from a factory or industrial operation. A brownfield can be potentially reused if the site is adequately cleaned up.


 

Hazards of a brownfield may include:

(1) heavy metals

(2) persistent organic pollutants (POP)

(3) asbestos

(4) silica

(5) other toxic chemicals

(6) radioactive compounds

 

The hazardous material may be a product made at the site, waste from production or raw material.

 

Exposure may come from:

(1) water on the site, including well water

(2) food grown on the brownfield

(3) animals eating vegetation on the brownfield or predators of animals living on the site

(4) dust inhalation

(5) digging or playing in soil
