Description

A patient with latex allergy may develop bronchospasm or asthma following an exposure to latex.


 

Clinical features:

(1) asthmatic symptoms following exposure to latex

(1a) contact with latex gloves

(1b) inhalation of cornstarch used to coat latex gloves

(1c) contact with medical device made of latex

(1d) contact with natural rubber

(1e) inhalation of burning tire smoke

(2) contact dermatitis at sites of cutaneous exposure

(3) allergic rhinoconjunctivitis following exposure to latex

(4) disappearance of symptoms with avoidance of latex exposure

(5) exclusion of other causes

 

People at risk:

(1) health care workers

(2) patients with spina bifida

(3) patients who have had multiple surgeries

(4) occupational exposure to natural rubber or latex

(5) certain food allergies
