Description

Bronchiectasis Rheumatoid Overlap Syndrome (BROS) refers to an overlap syndrome with bronchiectasis and rheumatoid arthritis (RA).


Features:

(1) The patient has evidence of rheumatoid arthritis without interstitial lung disease.

(2) The patient has evidence of non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis.

(3) The order of onset is not considered.

• Rheumatoid arthritis can also result in interstitial lung disease, which may be complicated by traction bronchiectasis.

 

For a patient with BROS both the bronchiectasis and rheumatoid arthritis tends to be more severe and associated with a higher mortality when compared to persons with only one of the conditions. The Bronchiectasis Severity Index (BSI) identifies patients at increased risk for mortality.
