Description

Manjaly et al reported the Brigham Eyelash Tool for Alopecia (BELA) for semi-quantifying the presence of eyelashes in a patient with alopecia. This can monitor eyelash loss over time. The authors are from Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston University, Tufts University, University of Massachusetts, Stanford University and Loyola University.

Patient selection: alopecia areata

Parameters:

(1) Grade of eyelash present, an integer from 0 (none discernible) to 3 (prominent)

(2) percent distribution of eyelashes present on the upper lash line, from 0 to 100

subscore for left eye =

= (Grade of eyelash presence) * (percent distribution)

BELA score =

= (subscore for left eye) + (subscore for right eye)

Interpretation:

• minimum subscore and minimum BELA score: 0

• maximum subscore: 3

• maximum BELA score: 6

• The lower the score the worse the eyelash alopecia.
