Description

Isaacs et al listed criteria for identifying a patient who should be considered for BRCA1 and BRCA2 screening. This can help identify patients with an hereditary risk for breast, ovarian and other cancers. The authors are from Georgetown University, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the University of Pennsylvania.


 

Relative with known mutation:

(1) relative of a patient with known BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation

 

Number of relatives with breast cancer and age at diagnosis:

(1) history of breast cancer <= 40 years of age

(2) history of breast cancer <= 50 years of age in >= 2 family members

(3) >= 3 cases of breast cancer in same lineage (any age)

 

Ovarian and/or breast cancer:

(1) male breast cancer with close relative with breast or ovarian cancer

(2) ovarian cancer and breast cancer <= 50 years of age in same lineage

(3) ovarian cancer and >= 2 cases of breast cancer in the same lineage

 

Ashkenazi Jew:

(1) male Ashkenazi Jew with breast cancer

(2) female Ashkenazi Jew with breast cancer <= 50 years of age

(3) female Ashkenazi Jew with ovarian cancer (any age)
