Description

A patient with a history of bowel obstruction or with high risk of bowel obstruction may need to be placed on a "bowel obstruction" diet. The diet requires the patient to avoid certain foods and ways of eating.


Foods to avoid:

(1) fruits or vegetables with skins or tough fibers, especially if raw or undercooked

(2) nuts, seeds, pips, and dried fruits

(3) high fiber foods or foods with insoluble fiber

(4) foods that can form a bezoar

(5) meat that is tough or gristly

 

Behaviors to avoid:

(1) eating large meals

(2) failing to completely chew solid food

(3) eating foods dry or with insufficient fluid intake

(4) swallowing gum or solid candies
