McNutt et al reported the Bowel Injury Prediction Score (BIPS) for the diagnosis of blunt intestinal trauma. This can help to avoid a delay in diagnosis. The authors are from the University of Texas at Houston.
Patient selection: blunt abdominal trauma
Parameters:
(1) CT grading scale for mesenteric and intestinal injury (from 0 to 5)
(2) reported abdominal tenderness in the Emergency Department
(3) WBC count per µL
A CT grade 5 indicates significant trauma (extravasation of contrast or pneumoperitoneum), which the BIPS unnecessary.

Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 3
• A score of 2 or 3 indicates a high probability of bowel injury, especially if the CT scan shows a bowel or mesenteric abnormality.
