Description

Athletes who run a lot may develop bone marrow edema in the lower extremities.

Patient selection: athlete

Features of bone marrow edema:

(1) high signal intensity in medullary areas on T2-weighted MR images

(2) located in the knee, ankle joint and foot

(3) may vary in location and intensity

(4) may be symptomatic or an incidental finding

The incidental finding of bone marrow edema by itself should not prompt a change in training or an intervention.
