Boldo is a tree that is native to the central region of Chile. It has been used as an herbal remedy but can be associated with toxicity and death.
Species: Peumus boldus Molina
Toxic compound: ascaridole, possibly others
The leaf oil is toxic, and it should not be used internally or externally.
The leaves may be used as an herbal tea or dried preparation that acts an antispasmodic and laxative. It can be used for a limited period of time, but safer and more effective alternatives are available.
Toxic effects:
(1) nausea and vomiting
(2) headache
(3) irritation to mucous membranes
(4) irritation to skin
(5) vertigo
(6) tinnitus and/or reduced hearing
(7) constipation
(8) diplopia
(9) initial CNS stimulation followed by depression
(10) allergic reaction
Severe exposures may be associated with:
(1) hepatotoxicity
(2) seizures
(3) coma
(4) circulatory collapse
(5) pulmonary edema
People at particular risk:
(1) pregnant women
(2) children
(3) elderly
