Tikuisis et al used a body surface scanner to develop equations for estimating body surface area (BSA). The authors are from Defence and Civil Institute of Environmental Medicine in Toronto.
Patient selection: adult from 18 to 65 years of age
Parameters:
(1) sex
(2) height in cm
(3) weight in kilograms
body surface area in square centimeters in a male =
= 128.1 * ((weight)^0.44) * ((height)^0.60)
body surface area in square centimeters in a female =
= 147.4 * ((weight)^0.47) * ((height)^0.55)
body surface area in square meters =
= (BSA in square cm) / 10000
