Description

A patient with scleroderma (systemic sclerosis) may be self-conscious about skin involvement. Jewett et al developed the Body Concealment Scale for Scleroderma (BCSS) to measure how much a patient tries to conceal the skin signs. The authors are from multiple institutions in Canada, England and the United States.


Items:

(1) wear clothes not liked

(2) wear long sleeves

(3) avoid wearing revealing clothing

(4) wear clothes that hide skin changes

(5) clothes worn to divert attention

(6) wear gloves

(7) avoid shaking hands

(8) hide hands

(9) avoid giving people change or other items

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 45

• The higher the score the greater the attempt at hiding lesions.
