Description

The board foot is a standard unit for ordering lumber.


 

Parameters:

(1) length in feet

(2) width in feet

(3) thickness in inches

 

1 board foot is a piece of lumber 1 foot long, 1 foot wide and 1 inch thick.

 

volume of the wood in board feet =

= (length in feet) * (width in feet) * (thickness in inches)

 

The width and thickness measurements are affected by drying and planing. Measurements after drying and planing will be less than when the wood was green.

 

total number of board feet for a lumber order =

= (number of board feet for a single piece) * (total number of pieces of lumber)

 

cost for the lumber order =

= (total number of board feet) * (unit cost of a board foot)
