Description

The blue nevus of the prostate gland is a rare lesion that has no malignant potential.


The blue nevus of the prostate may be encountered in prostate tissue removed for another cause such as prostatic hypertrophy.

 

Affected prostate tissue may grossly appear black or dark in color.

 

Features of the blue nevus:

(1) proliferation of melanocytic cells in the prostatic stroma

(2) benign histologic features

(3) positive immunohistochemical stains for melanocytic cells

 

Differential diagnosis:

(1) prostatic melanosis

(2) prostatic melanoma

(3) hemosiderosis or hemochromatosis

(4) deposition of lipofuscin

(5) homogentisic acid deposits
