The Bishop score is used to assess women for the induction of labor with oxytocin with or without artificial rupture of the placental membranes.
Parameters for Bishop Score:
(1) dilatation of the cervix
(2) effacement
(3) station
(4) cervical consistency
(5) position

where:
• A modification of the Bishop score uses 1 point for a station of -1 rather than the 2 points assigned in the original score.
• The Burnett score (see below) is sometimes referred to as the modified Bishop score.
Bishop score =
= SUM(points for the 5 parameters)
Interpretation:
• maximum score: 13
• minimum score: 0
• Induction of labor can be safely performed when the Bishop pelvic score is >= 9.
• A score of <=4 is associated with a significant induction failure rate.
