Description

Wu et al developed a simple score for predicting the risk of mortality soon after a patient presents with acute pancreatitis. This can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School and Cardinal Health in Marlborough, Massachusetts.

Acronym: BISAP (BUN, impaired mental status, SIRS, age, pleural effusion)

Parameters during the first 24 hours after hospital admission:

(1) serum BUN

(2) mental status

(3) systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS)

(4) age of the patient

(5) pleural effusion

BISAP score =

= SUM(points for all 5 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 5

• The higher the score the greater the mortality.
