Description

The Bipolar Spectrum Diagnostic Scale (BSDS) can help to identify a patient with bipolar spectrum disorder.


Statements:

(1) mood and/or energy levels shift drastically from time to time

(2) moods and/or energy is very low at times and very high at times

(3) a low state is associated with lack of energy, need for extra sleep or little motivation

(4) weight gain can occur during a low state

(5) low state associated with feeling depressed

(6) low state associated with feeling hopeless or suicidal

(7) low state associated with impaired ability to work or to be social

(8) low state may last from a few days to a few weeks

(9) there are periods when mood and energy level are normal, without impairment

(10) notice a marked shift in the way you feel

(11) high state associated with a marked increase in energy

(12) high state associated with feeling hyper

(13) high state associated with being irritable or aggressive

(14) high state associated with taking on too many activities at once

(15) high state associated with excessive spending

(16) high state associated with being more talkative, more outgoing and/or more sexually active

(17) behavior during a high state may be strange or annoying to others

(18) high state associated with difficulty with co-workers or police

(19) high state associated with increase substance or alcohol use
