Description

Bray et al used bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) to estimate fat-free mass (FFM) in young Americans. The authors are from the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, Louisianna.

Patient selection: 10 and 12 year old African American and White children

Parameters:

(1) height in centimeters

(2) resistance in Ohms

(3) weight in kilograms

resistance index = RI =

= ((height in cm)^2) / (resistance)

fat-free mass =

= ((0.4 * (resistance index)) + (0.148 * (weight)) + 3.32) / 0.76

percent body fat =

= ((body mass) – (fat free mass)) / (body mass) * 100%
