Description

Binge eating can rarely result in gastric rupture. It can occur during Ramadan when daytime fasting is followed by eating.

Patient selection: history of recent binge eating

Risk factors for gastric rupture:

(1) concurrent ingestion of sodium bicarbonate

(2) gastritis, peptic ulcer, or other cause of weakened gastric wall

(3) gastric outlet obstruction

(4) volume of food ingested

One mechanism is impaired perfusion through gastric blood vessels, resulting in ischemic necrosis.

The most common sites of rupture are the lesser curvature and the anterior wall.

Complication:

(1) chemical and/or bacterial peritonitis

(2) partial gastrectomy
