Description

Bilateral diffuse uveal melanocytic proliferation (BDUMP) is a paraneoplastic syndrome that usually presents with a deterioration in the patient's vision.

Associated carcinomas:

(1) lung

(2) ovary

(3) pancreas

(4) gallbladder

(5) uterus

(6) cervix

(7) colon

The eye shows multiple uveal melanocytic tumors.

(1) The lesions are reddish, elevated pigmented patches in both eyes.

(2) The lesions may be or become confluent.

(3) Usually the lesions do not metastasize.

Ophthalmologic findings may include:

(1) bilateral constriction of visual fields and/or visual loss

(2) exudative retinal detachment

(3) cataract formation

(4) severe neovascular glaucoma

A uveal biopsy shows sparing of the choriocapillaris.

BDUMP may appear before the underlying tumor is clinically evident. Successful treatment of the tumor can slow BDUMP progression.
