Description

Horlick et al reported bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) equations for predicting body composition of pediatric patients. One equation was for fat-free mass (FFM). The authors are from the Children's Hospital of New York, Columbia University and NIH.

Patient selection: age 4-18 years of age

Parameters:

(1) height in cm

(2) resistance in Ohms

(3) weight in kilograms

(4) age in years

(5) sex (1 if male; 0 if female)

value of A =

= (0.459 * ((height)^2) / (resistance)) + (0.064 * (weight)) + 3.474

value of B =

= 0.709 - (0.009 * (age)) - (0.016 * (points for sex))

fat-free mass in kg =

= A / B

Performance:

• The r-squared was 0.997.
