Description

Thibodeau et al evaluated the significance of bendopnea in patients with heart failure. The authors are from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.

Bendopnea is shortness of breath when bending forward.

Associations in patients with systolic heart failure:

(1) increased risk of heart failure admission within 3 months

(2) higher supine ventricular filling pressures, especially if the patient has a low cardiac index

(3) higher VE to VCO2 ratio on cardiopulmonary stress testing

(4) higher NYHA class, often class IV
