Tefferi et al reported a risk categories for myelodysplasia that can be used at a point-of-care. The authors are from the Mayo Clinic.
Patient selection: myelodysplastic syndrome
Parameters:
(1) karyotype
(2) red cell transfusions
(3) percent blasts in the bone marrow
(4) age in years
Low risk - all 3 of the following:
(1) low risk karyotype (normal, 5q-)
(2) no red blood cell transfusions
(3) bone marrow blasts < 10%
High risk - all 3 of the following:
(1) intermediate or high risk (monosomal) karyotype
(2) red cell transfusions dependent
(3) bone marrow blasts >= 10%
High risk - high risk karyotype and one of the following:
(1) red cell transfusions dependent
(2) bone marrow blasts >= 10%
Intermediate risk: not classified as low or high risk
