Batteries can present a number of hazards. Precautions should be in place to avoid these.
Potential hazards:
(1) combustible gases (hydrogen, other)
(2) acid and electrolyte solution
(3) lead
Sealed batteries are less likely to leak but can crack.
Protective measures:
(1) personal protective equipment: face shields, aprons, rubber gloves
(2) eye wash and skin wash stations
(3) chemical spill kit
Battery storage areas should be well-ventilated and protected from the elements.
Racks and trays should be acid-resistant.
Battery recharging stations should be protected from damage.
An appropriate fire extinguisher should be readily available (multipurpose, non-water)
Inspections should look for evidence of:
(1) corrosion
(2) leaked fluids
(3) excessive heat
