The Basic Clinical Scoring System (BCSS) is an extremely simple scoring system for atopic dermatitis. It provides a rough estimate that can be useful in long-term followup studies.
Locations examined:
(1) head and neck
(2) anterior trunk
(3) posterior trunk
(4) arms
(5) legs

total score =
= SUM(points for all 5 sites)
Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 5
• The higher the score the more extensive the atopic dermatitis.
Performance:
• There is little interoberver variation.
Limitations:
• As shown in Figure 5 (page 949) in Sprikkelman et al a SCORAD score of 25 can be seen with a BCSS score of 3, 4 or 5. A BCSS of 3 covers a SCORAD range of 8 to 39.
• Simplicity could be maintained by adding a scale for number of lesions (none, few, several, many) at each site, scored 0, 1, 2, and 3. This would expand the value range from 0 to 15.
