Description

Alves et al evaluated risk factors associated with mortality in pediatric patients with meningococcal sepsis. This can help to identify patients who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from multiple hospitals in England, Austria and the Netherlands.

Patient selection: "child" (mean age 3.25 +/- 0.59 years, or 2.1 to 4.4) with meningococcemia with fever, hemorrhagic rash, sepsis or septic shock

Parameters:

(1) base excess in mmol/L (usually a negative number since the patients usually have a base deficit)

(2) platelet count in 10^9/L

X =

= (0.18909 * (base excess)) + (0.01015 * (platelet count)) + 3.07861

probability of mortality = BEP score =

= 1 / (1 + EXP(X))

Interpretation:

• The score was considered positive if the BEP score was > 0.3.

Limitations:

• The actual derivation of the logistic regression is not reported.

• Usually the probability equation is = 1 / (1 + EXP((-1) * X)), which means that the true formula for X should be (-1) times the value given above.
