Description

A person's daily energy needs is estimated as the basal energy expenditure (BEE). The actual energy needs may be +/- 10-15% of this estimate.

BEE in a man =

= 66.473 + (13.752 * (weight)) + (5.003 * (height)) - (6.755 * (age))

BEE in a woman =

= 655.096 + (9.563 * (weight)) + (1.85 * (height)) - (4.676 * (age))

where:

• BEE is expressed in kcal per 24 hours

• weight is actual body weight in kilograms (see below)

• height is in centimeters

• age is in years

If the patient is obese (greater than 125% ideal body weight), then an adjustment for the weight needs to be made, since fat is metabolically inactive. Various coefficients are used with X in the following equation ranging from 0.25 to 0.50:

adjusted body weight =

= (ideal body weight) + (X * ((actual body weight) - (ideal body weight)))
