Description

Reducing the number of drugs that a patient takes may not be a simple task. A number of barriers may be present depending on a patient's individual parameters.

Barriers to deprescribing:

(1) multiple doctors

(2) concern about relapse

(3) withdrawal

(4) impact on quality of life

(5) complex and multiple comorbidities

(6) impact on functional ability

(7) shifting priorities

(8) no potentially inappropriate drugs

(9) uncertain or negative impact on existing drug-drug interactions

Sometimes it may not be possible to safely deprescribe, but it should still be attempted.
