Description

Baastrup described a form of low back pain that is also referred to as kissing spines.


Main pathologic change: close approximation of spinous processes usually in the lower lumbar region often with hyperostosis

 

Features:

(1) positional low back pain (with extension)

(2) may be associated with spondylolisthesis

(3) narrowing of disc spaces at multiple levels

(4) disc degeneration with the "vacuum" phenomenon on CT scan

(5) weakening of the interspinous and supraspinous ligaments with bursitis

(6) formation of interspinous fluid clefts, facet and dorsal epidural cysts

(7) segmental spinal canal stenosis with neurogenic claudication
