Morinigo et al reported the B-APNEIC score for evaluating a patient for obstructive sleep apnea. The authors are from Tufts University.
B-APNEIC is an acronym for BMI, Arterial Pressure, Neck Circumference, Interruption or Cessation of breathing.
Parameters:
(1) body mass index (BMI)
(2) arterial blood pressure
(3) neck circumference
(4) witnessed interruption or cessation of breathing during sleep (sleep apnea)

where:
• Cut-offs for BMI, blood pressure and neck circumference are nonspecific.
• Apneic patients had BMI of 35 +/- 7 vs 31 +/- 8 for nonapneic.
• Apneic patients had a neck circumference of 43 +/- 5 vs 30 +/- 9 for nonapneic.

Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 5
• A score >= 3 is associated with obstructive sleep apnea.
Performance:
• The area under the ROC curve is 0.77.
