Description

The azygous lobe is a congenital anatomic variant of the lung.

The azygous vein descends into the thorax during embryologic development. Sometimes it drags a pleat of visceral pleura along during its descent, creating an extra pulmonary lobe in the medial upper lobe, usually on the right side.

Imaging studies show the comma sign which represents the azygous fissure which is associated with the azygous vein.
