Ayahuasca is a plant tea in the Amazon with psychedelic properties.
Components of the tea:
(1) Banisteriopsis caapi (a vine)
(2) Psychotria viridis (a shrub)
Active ingredients:
(1) N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT, 5-HT2A agonist), which is hallucinogenic
(2) beta-carboline alkaloids (harmine, tetrahydroharmine, harmaline) with monoamine oxidase inhibitor activity
Effects on humans:
(1) acute psychedelic effect with elevated mood, altered perceptions and hallucinations
(2) prolonged antidepressant effect
Adverse effects:
(1) nausea and vomiting
(2) hypertension
(3) tachycardia
(4) agitation
(5) seizures
(6) cardiopulmonary arrest
