Automated Red Cell Exchange Protocol of Mandal et al for Sickle Cell Anemia

Red blood cell exchange may be needed to reduce the risk of complications in a patient with a high level of hemoglobin S. Mandal et al reported their protocol for automated red cell exchange in these patients. The authors are from the University of Chicago.

Target goal for HbS level after exchange: 30-35%

Levels of HbS before and after the exchange is used to document efficacy. The post-exchange sample was drawn 1-2 hours after the exchange was performed.
