Description

Gheorghe et al identified factors which can help to identify a patient with an overlap syndrome involving autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) and either primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) or primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). The authors are from Fundeni Clinical Institute in Bucharest, Romania.

Independent factors associated with the overlap syndrome by logistic regression analysis:

(1) "probable" score (10 to 15 points) on the revisied IAHG score (see previous section)

(2) antinuclear antibody (ANA) negative

(3) age < 35 years at onset

Additional factors seen factors seen on univariate analysis:

(1) male gender

(2) suboptimal response to therapy

(3) histologic features of the cholestasis (periductal and ductal inflammation, ductular proliferation, ductopenia, periductal fibrosis)
