A number of autoimmune disorders may involve the Achilles tendon. If the inflammation is neglected there is a risk of tendon rupture.
Involvement of the Achilles may include tendinitis and/or enthesitis.
Spondyloarthropathy can involve the Achilles tendon with some frequency.
Other autoimmune disorders which can involve the Achilles tendon:
(1) systemic lupus erythematosus
(2) rheumatoid arthritis
(3) psoriatic arthritis
(4) Behcet disease
Differential diagnosis:
(1) complication of drug therapy for the autoimmune disorder (corticosteroid, other)
(2) complication of a fluoroquinolone or other drug
(3) complication of exercise
