The auto-brewery syndrome refers to endogenous production of alcohol by fermentation in the gut.
Synonym: intragastrointestinal alcohol fermentation syndrome, gut fermentation syndrome, endogenous alcohol syndrome
Features:
(1) underlying bowel disorder, typically short bowel syndrome
(2) colonization of the gut by a yeast (Candida or Saccharomyces species)
(3) carbohydrate source in diet
(4) clinical evidence of fermentation (excess gas production)
(5) measurable blood ethanol concentration not explained by ingestion
Some patients may produce enough ethanol to become intoxicated.
