Description

In Australia the bull and jumper ants can be a serious health problem.


 

The ants:

(1) are large (3 cm or more)

(2) have large mandibles

(3) are aggressive

(4) may be able to jump onto intruders

(5) may pursue an intruder for some distance

 

Classification: genus Myrmecia

 

Jumper (jack jumper) ants: M. pilosula, M. ludlowi

 

Bull ants (bull dog) ants: M pyriformis, M. gratiosa, M. gulosa

 

The toxin of these ants is composed of a mixture of compounds, such as histamine, hyaluronidase, and phospholipase A.

 

Risk factors for serious injury:

(1) envenomation from a large number of ants

(2) anaphylactic reaction to the venom

(3) serious comorbid conditions in the victim
