Description

While most cases of scabies involve typical lesions in a typical distribution, atypical presentations may occur that can delay diagnosis.


Atypical lesions:

(1) less than 3 lesions in any body region (typical lesions have >= 3 lesions in a body region or within an area of 10 cm in diameter)

(2) vesicles

(3) pustules

(4) crusted scabies

(5) bullous scabies (arising from urticaria)

(6) nodular scabies

(7) scabies incognito (after treatment with topical or systemic corticosteroids

 

Atypical distribution:

(1) head, neck or scalp

(2) pressure areas in a bedridden patient
