A person who is perceived as more attractive based on appearance or personality may advance further than a person of comparable ability who appears average. In the same way an unattractive person may be at a competitive disadvantage.
Parameters:
(1) attractiveness
(2) capabilities (intelligence, diligence, etc)
(3) status
If an attractive person has a status greater than expected for the level of capabilities, then attractiveness bias may be present.
If an unattractive person has a status less than expected for the level of capabilities, then unattractiveness bias may be present.
One consequence of attractiveness bias is that a person who is smart and good-looking may not be credited with being as smart as they are.
