Description

Boriani et al described the atrial fibrillation burden as a factor contributing to the risk of stroke. The authors are from multiple institutions in Europe.

Patient selection: paroxysmal atrial fibrillation

The atrial fibrillation burden was defined as the time spent in atrial fibrillation during each day.

A low atrial fibrillation burden is a duration less than 5 minutes per day.

The maximum atrial fibrillation burden is ">= 24hours" which is atrial fibrillation all through one day and extending into the second day.

The atrial fibrillation burden can supplement the CHA2DS2-VASc score in stroke risk determination.
