Byerly et al developed a simple measure for compliance by an athlete in his or her rehabilitation. The authors are from the Community Hospital and University of Indianapolis in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Patient selection: athlete with musculoskeletal injury that requires rehabilitation
Parameters:
(1) attendance at a scheduled appointment
(2) percent participation and completion of prescribed exercises

|
percent participation in rehabilitation program |
<percent as decimal fraction> |
session score =
= SUM(points for the 2 parameters)
Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score for a session: 2
• An score of >= 1.75 was defined as adherence.
overall score for compliance =
= SUM(points for all of the scheduled sessions)
Limitations (Shaw et al):
• Reliability testing and validation were not reported.
• Using a cutoff of 1.75 for defining adherence may be an arbitrary decision.
Purpose: To evaluate an athlete's participation with a rehabilitation program based on the score of Byerly et al.
